An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent has accused the federal government of allowing lies and politics to corrupt the ongoing criminal investigation into Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden.

The allegations emerged in a letter sent by the agent’s lawyer, Mark Lytle, to congressional leaders of both parties on Wednesday.

Though the letter does not explicitly mention Hunter Biden, sources confirmed to The Wall Street Journal that the investigation into his financial dealings is the subject in question.

The letter identifies the client as an “IRS criminal supervisory special agent” who has made legally protected disclosures within the IRS, the U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, and the Department of Justice, Office of Inspector General.

According to the letter, the agent now seeks to make protected whistleblower disclosures to Congress, despite the risk of retaliation.

The disclosures allegedly contradict sworn congressional testimony by a senior political appointee, involve the failure to mitigate clear conflicts of interest, and detail instances of preferential treatment and political bias impacting decisions that would typically be made by career law enforcement professionals in similar cases without political connections.

The criminal investigation into Hunter Biden is led by Delaware’s U.S. Attorney David Weiss and involves FBI and IRS investigators examining his foreign business dealings, tax affairs, and more.

The Washington Post reported in October that federal agents believed they had enough evidence to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes and a false statement related to a gun purchase, but the decision to file charges rests with Weiss.

Hunter Biden, who only revealed the existence of the years-long inquiry after the 2020 election, has maintained that he expects to be cleared of wrongdoing.

Attorney General Merrick Garland briefly discussed the investigation during congressional testimony last month, stating, “I pledged not to interfere with that investigation and I have carried through on my pledge.”

Republicans in Congress have launched their own investigations into the Biden family, expressing concerns about corruption beyond Hunter, while Democrats have largely dismissed these efforts as politically motivated.

The House Oversight Committee has gained access to suspicious activity reports (SARs) related to the financial transactions of Biden family members and their associates.

In response to the IRS whistleblower letter, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said the Biden administration “may be obstructing justice by blocking efforts to charge Hunter Biden for tax violations,” according to a statement reported by CBS News.
