Natasha Cloud, famed Washington Mystics player in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), has made headlines recently with her pointed criticism of the United States.
As a successful athlete with a reported net worth of $5 million, some view Cloud’s disparaging remarks about her own country as perplexing.
On a recent Friday, Cloud voiced her critique of the country, stating via Twitter that “Our country is trash in so many ways and instead of using our resources to make it better we continue to oppress Marginalized groups that we have targeted since the beginning of times.” She then specifically mentioned “Black/brown communities & LGBTQ+,” stating the community is “too powerful to still be attacking issues separate.”
The origin of these comments appears to be a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision which affirmed the First Amendment rights of a Colorado Christian who declined to construct a wedding website for a same-sex couple.
Cloud doubled down on her hate for this country on Instagram, where Fox News reports she described the U.S. as “moving backward” and referred to America as a “joke.”
Her incendiary remarks attracted considerable backlash, with critics challenging the paradox of her condemnation of a country that simultaneously fueled her prosperity and fame.
Undeterred, Cloud continued to express her discontent the following Saturday, responding to those suggesting she relocate to countries like Russia or China.
She further raised concerns about U.S. societal issues such as mass shootings and white supremacists.
In an arguably controversial statement, Cloud suggested that the U.S. law enforcement system is guilty of racially motivated murders and alleged a racially skewed jail system.
“Less police murders, no mass incarceration based on race, adequate minimum wage, rights to my body as a woman, I MEAN I CAN KEEP GOING,” she elaborated on Twitter.
Cloud rounded out her argument by critiquing the U.S. political landscape, lamenting what she sees as self-serving politicians and divisive rhetoric. “America is a business,” she stated.
Her public commentary did not stop at political commentary, as she went on to express her displeasure with critics who she perceived as being motivated by racism, and she also criticized religious individuals.
Cloud’s journey to the world of professional basketball was not typical.
She attended a Catholic High School in the upscale western suburbs of Philadelphia with a tuition of $10,000 per year.
Subsequently, she pursued her studies at the Universities of Maryland and Saint Joseph’s before her drafting in the 2015 WNBA Draft.
Cloud currently holds a 3-year $565,000 contract with the Mystics, earning $190,000 annually as reported by SportTrac.
Beyond her basketball prowess, Cloud is known for her activism. Notably, she took a hiatus from basketball in 2020 to actively support the Black Lives Matter movement.
