On Monday, celebrated actor Kevin Spacey, 64, was acquitted in a London court following a sexual assault trial that spanned nearly a month.
Four men had accused Spacey of various sexually inappropriate actions, including non-consensual touching and engagement in penetrative sexual activity.
Over the course of the trial, jurors listened attentively to testimony from four men who claimed to have had uncomfortable encounters with Spacey, dating from 2001 to 2013.
These allegations ranged from unexpected physical contact to more aggressive behavior. Notably, one man accused Spacey of performing a sexual act while he was unconscious.
Christine Agnew, the prosecuting attorney, argued in her closing remarks that Spacey’s celebrity status shielded his misbehavior. She suggested that his fame created opportune moments for what she termed an “opportunity grab”.
Agnew stated that the striking similarity between the four men’s accounts of Spacey’s alleged misconduct indicated not a conspiracy against the actor, but a “trademark” action on his part.
The defense, led by Spacey’s attorney, called into question the veracity of three of the men’s testimonies, labeling them as dishonest. He further implored the jury not to mistake a “clumsy pass” at the fourth man as an assault.
Spacey himself took the stand over two days, vehemently denying any violent conduct against his accusers. He instead portrayed their relationship as “intimate” and “somewhat sexual,” expressing his surprise and disappointment that, “the man I knew would … 20 years later stab me in the back.”
This depiction of events significantly differed from the testimonies of the alleged victims, who claimed that Spacey’s advances were abrupt and invasive.
Legendary musician Elton John also provided remote testimony in support of Spacey. He confirmed that the “American Beauty” star attended his annual White Tie & Tiara Ball only once in 2001, a statement that contradicts an accuser’s claim of an assault en route to the gala in 2004 or 2005.
Spacey first encountered sexual misconduct accusations in 2017 when fellow actor Anthony Rapp alleged an assault that took place at a party in the 1980s. Despite Rapp’s civil lawsuit against him, Spacey was found not liable.
In the wake of Rapp’s allegations, more men voiced similar accusations against Spacey, leading to his removal from the Netflix series “House of Cards.”
Following these legal and career setbacks, Spacey has recently made his way back to the silver screen, landing roles in Franco Nero’s “The Man Who Drew God,” the biographical drama “Once Upon a Time in Croatia,” and the film “Peter Five Eight.”
