In a serious escalation, the USS Carney, a U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyer, and several commercial ships were attacked in the Red Sea on Sunday.
This attack, confirmed by the Pentagon and reported by AP, marks a worrying increase in sea attacks in the Middle East, related to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
The Pentagon has acknowledged these attacks but hasn’t given many details yet.
It’s still unknown if the USS Carney fought back against its attackers.
A U.S. official, who chose to remain anonymous, stated the attack started around 10 a.m. in Sanaa, Yemen, and went on for about five hours.
The Houthi group, allied with Iran and controlling much of Yemen’s coast along the Red Sea, hinted they would soon make an “important” announcement following this incident.
This group is involved in another recent incident.
Three weeks ago, the USS Carney took down three cruise missiles and several drones launched by the Houthis, backed by Iran.
The Pentagon’s Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder highlighted this action by the Carney as a show of American military strength and a commitment to protecting allies and interests in that region.
The source of the latest attack on the Carney is still unknown, and the Pentagon hasn’t guessed who it might be.
Adding to the tension, the British military reported a possible drone attack and explosions in the Red Sea but didn’t give more information.
Also, last month, an Israeli-linked cargo ship was captured by the Houthis.
The Houthis, known as terrorists and close allies of Iran, are a major force in the Red Sea area.
These events show the increasing instability in the Middle East, with Iran’s involvement playing a significant role.
