NextImg:Twitter's New Fact Check Destroys Anti-Israel Dem Rashida Tlaib's Tweet Instantly

In a recent tweet, Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) faced Twitter’s new fact-checking system and lost dismally.

Tlaib’s tweet called Israel an “apartheid state” and accused it of being “born out of violence and the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.”

Tlaib’s tweet came as a response to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s post highlighting the “special relationship” between the U.S. and Israel.

“The United States and Israel share a special relationship: we are the only two countries in history that were conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that we are all equal. I know the best days for Israel—and our unbreakable bond—are ahead of us,” McCarthy said.

Tlaib has often used her position in Congress to espouse antisemitism and Twitter’s users were having no part of it.

Twitter’s “Community Notes” system, expanded under new platform owner Elon Musk, promptly fact-checked Tlaib’s tweet, pointing out several inaccuracies.

The fact-check first noted that Israel was established by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181, providing a link to the document on the U.N.’s official website.

The fact-check next attacked Tlaib’s assertion that Israel conducts “ethnic cleansing” on Palestinians.

“Ethnic cleansing” affected both Jewish and Arab communities caught up in the war initiated by 5 Arab states who opposed the existence of Israel,” the fact check said. This point was supported by a link to the State Department’s official history of the Arab-Israeli War of 1948.

Additionally, the fact-check highlighted that over 20% of Israel’s population consists of Arab citizens with “full and equal rights.” A Democracy Institute study was linked, showing declining infant mortality rates and increasing life expectancies among the country’s Arab residents.

Twitter’s new fact-checking system, which Musk announced would make “no exceptions” for “materially false statements,” has been a point of discussion since its inception.

Musk emphasized that anyone, including heads of state and himself, could be fact-checked under this system.

The fact-checking of Tlaib, a high-profile Democratic member of the progressive “Squad,” comes as a notable change after conservatives have long claimed that social media companies target conservative views unfairly.

Tlaib’s tweet also drew criticism from other Twitter users, including former U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman.

In a response to the Michigan Democrat’s tweet, Friedman stated that Tlaib was “a bit off” on the facts, adding, “Actually, the State of Israel was born notwithstanding the unsuccessful Palestinian attempts at ethnic cleansing to remove the Jews, through acts of terror and collaboration with Hitler (whose dear friend was Grand Mufti of Jerusalem).”

In a additional comment, Friedman stated, “Ok, one more time, even simpler yet. In 1946, Palestine was inhabited by Jews and Arabs — neither had a state, British in charge. Then 72% of the land was given to Jordan. Israel declared its independence within the remaining sliver per the UN. Wars etc. Any of this getting thru?”
