In an interview with “Fox News Sunday’s” host Shannon Bream, former President Trump’s attorney, Alina Habba, made it clear that taking a plea deal in the classified documents handling case is out of the question.
According to Habba, “You plea when you’ve done something wrong or when you have no shot. That’s an admission of guilt. He would never admit guilt.” Habba, who previously represented Trump in a sexual abuse and defamation case, emphasized that Trump is innocent in the federal documents probe.
Habba went on to argue that there is nothing inherently wrong with Trump declassifying documents, retaining them, or engaging in negotiations with the National Archives and Records Administration.
She firmly believes that the current investigation is nothing more than politically motivated election interference orchestrated by political opponents.
Habba further criticized the raid on Trump’s home, claiming it was unwarranted, and voiced concerns about a dual-tier system of justice that appears to be at play.
While the Presidential Records Act could potentially serve as a defense for President Trump, Habba stated that neither President Biden nor former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be able to rely on the same argument.
However, when asked about the possibility of Trump facing decades in jail if convicted, Habba suggested that he is not dwelling on that thought.
She declined to comment on whether Trump would prefer to delay any trial until after the 2024 election, deeming it a strategic question to be addressed internally.
Regarding the widely-circulated photo showing a spilled box of materials, Habba dismissed the significance of the items depicted.
She referred to them as “mementos,” consisting of newspaper articles and photographs that Trump has the right to possess.
Habba stressed the importance of context and promised that the defense would bring it to light, highlighting that their side has yet to be fully heard.
