A significant debate has been ignited following the triumph of a biological male in the grueling 137-mile long Belgian Waffle Ride held in North Carolina. Austin Killips, 27, left his female competitors, Paige Onweller and Flavia Oliveira, trailing behind, finishing a staggering five minutes ahead.
Killips’ victory has sparked discussions about fair competition in women’s sports. Critics argue that allowing biological males to compete against biological females creates an uneven playing field, raising concerns about the integrity of women’s athletics.
Voices of dissent emerged after Killips was embroiled in controversy during the UCI Cyclocross National Championships in December 2022.
Accusations were leveled against him for allegedly pushing fellow cyclist Hannah Arensman off the race course.
Arensman, who finished fourth, expressed her frustration, particularly highlighting the inherent physical advantages that biological males possess.
“While it is expected to experience physical contact in cycling as a full-body sport, the dynamics change when someone born male, towering over six feet tall, collides with you,” lamented Arensman.
She admitted that the incident impacted her race, but she strove to remain focused and determined. Nevertheless, the video evidence of the incident further intensified the debate surrounding fair competition.
Arensman recently announced her retirement from professional cycling and, in an amicus brief submitted to West Virginia’s Supreme Court, emphasized the need to protect female athletes from unfair competition.
She called upon the governing bodies responsible for women’s sports to address the challenges faced by female competitors.
“After my last race at the UCI Cyclocross National Championships, where I finished fourth, I made the difficult decision to end my cycling career,” wrote Arensman. “Witnessing a man finish ahead of me, accompanied by several physical interactions throughout the race, was deeply distressing for my family and me.”
Expressing her concerns about the future of women’s sports, Arensman urged sports organizations to prioritize the preservation of fair competition for female athletes.
“I empathize with young girls striving to excel in sports, who now face a reality where achieving records and becoming champions in cycling seems increasingly elusive due to the participation of men in our division,” she said.
Arensman’s plea underscores the frustration felt by many female athletes who believe their rights and opportunities are being compromised.
Paige Onweller, one of the participants in the Belgian Waffle Ride, acknowledged the glaring disparity between herself and Killips.
Reflecting on the controversy, Onweller chose to emphasize the current Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) rule, which permits transgender athletes to compete in women’s divisions.
“While riding alongside Austin and Flavia for most of the day, I realized the vast difference in power and ability,” Onweller shared in a blog post.
She acknowledged the controversy surrounding the issue but refrained from sharing personal opinions, instead underscoring the importance of providing a competitive platform for all athletes, irrespective of their identities.
