NextImg:The Dark Side of Instagram Reels and How to Protect Your Kids from It

In a recent exposé by The Wall Street Journal, concerning discoveries were made regarding Instagram Reels, a popular feature on the social media platform owned by Meta.

The investigation, detailed in the Journal, highlights a significant and alarming trend: Instagram Reels tends to recommend adult-themed content to users who follow young influencers, including children and teenagers.

This finding emerged from an experiment conducted by The Wall Street Journal’s team. They created test accounts on Instagram, simulating adult users on new devices, and began following accounts of preteen and teen influencers.

The subsequent behavior of Instagram’s recommendation algorithm was deeply troubling. The Journal reports that, after following young girls, the test accounts began receiving recommendations that skewed towards adult-themed content. In some instances, this included accounts promoting explicit adult material.

The situation got worse when these test accounts followed users who were themselves followers of these young influencers. The Journal’s investigation disturbingly notes, “the platform served a mix of adult pornography and child-sexualizing material.”

This suggests that Meta’s artificial intelligence system, which is designed to tailor content based on user preferences, is inadvertently creating a pathway that connects adult users with content that sexualizes children.

Experts in algorithm technology who reviewed these tests confirmed this worrying trend.

They found that Meta’s AI tracking appears to learn and act on the assumption that users interested in young content creators might also engage with material that sexualizes children, thus directing them towards such content.

In light of these findings, the role of parental vigilance is paramount.

Instagram, recognizing the need for safety, mandates a minimum age requirement of 13 years for account creation, however there is no age verification beyond a click of a button. Make no mistake there are many, many users under the age of 13, which is still too young for adult sexual content.

Instagram has developed an in-app tool named “Supervision on Instagram,” aimed at enabling parents to monitor their teenagers’ activities on the platform. This tool offers functionalities like tracking screen time, overseeing account interactions, and managing sensitivity settings.

Instructions for common parental controls are below as outlined by Fox News.

Setting Up Parent Supervision on your cell phone:

Log onto Instagram on your phone.
Tap your profile picture at the bottom right.
Click the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner.
Tap Settings and privacy.
Scroll down and then tap Supervision and then select Get started.
Invite your teen by clicking invite.
Then tap on their profile or type their name/user name in the search window, then click on their profile when it appears below your search. A white check mark should appear in a blue circle next to their profile.
Then click Invite at the bottom of the screen. It will confirm you’ve seen an invite with a pop window appearing on your screen.

Setting up Parent Supervision on your computer:

Log onto Instagram from your computer.
Click the three horizontal lines next to the word More in the bottom left.
Then click Settings.
Scroll down and click Supervision.
Click Create invite.
Review the information on the screen, then click Create Invite.
Click Copy invite or the invite link to copy it to your clipboard, then paste it into your chosen app to share with your teen or click Send invite and choose the way you want to send it to your teen.

Have your teen accept the invite.

Here’s how to view sensitivity settings:

Click Profile in the left menu.
Click Settings in the top right.
Click Supervision.
In the left menu, under Accounts, click on your teen’s account.
Under Account info, some of your teen’s settings will be visible.

How to delete your child’s Instagram account:

Parents do not have the ability to delete their children’s Instagram accounts. However, your teen can delete their own account so it is always up to the parent.

How to delete your own Instagram account using the app on your iPhone:

Tap on your profile picture at the bottom right to go to your profile.
Tap three horizontal lines in the top right, then tap Settings and privacy.
Search deactivation or delete in the search box.
Select your Instagram account and then tap Delete.
Select an option from the menu below Deleting your Instagram account and tap continue, then re-enter your password. The option to permanently delete your account will only appear after you’ve selected a reason from the menu and entered your password.
Tap Delete account to confirm.

How you can delete your Instagram account from your computer:

Go to the Delete Your Account page. You will need to be logged into your Instagram on the web.
Select an option from the dropdown menu below, “Why do you want to delete [account name]?” and re-enter your password. The option to permanently delete your account will only appear after you’ve selected a reason from the menu and entered your password.
Click Delete [username].

The implications of The Wall Street Journal’s investigation are significant, not only for Instagram and its parent company Meta but also for all social media for the safety and the protection of young users.

This report also calls into question the effectiveness of AI algorithms in safeguarding against inappropriate content rather than pointing people to it.
