The Walker Art Center, a contemporary art museum in Minneapolis that has received taxpayer funding, organized an event inviting families to engage in a “playful ceremony to summon and befriend their demon,” according the The Blaze.
The event was held on August 5 and included activities associated with demon summoning and conjuring.
The event, hosted by artist Tamar Ettun, aimed to explore the ancient myth of the aerial spirit demon Lilit, with a focus on feminist reinterpretation.
Tamar Ettun, known as a performance artist and who identifies as a sexual plurality, has created a “multidisciplinary project” to engage with the myth of Lilit.
The project involves interactions with participants through text messages, leading to offline activities. The project seeks to subvert the traditional misogynistic archetype of Lilit and reimagine her as an “Empathic Demon.”
Ettun’s art has included raising sculptures in honor of the demon and engaging in activities that involve potentially controversial or graphic elements, such as imagery involving placenta.
The Walker Art Center’s event involved constructing vessels to hold personal demons and concluded with a somatic movement meditation intended to “befriend shadows.”
Minnesota taxpayers have previously supported the Walker Art Center through the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund, which has faced criticism for funding projects considered controversial or ideologically aligned, including those with a “queer lens,” anti-police documentaries, and projects promoting transvestic agitprop.
