NextImg:Swedish Embassy Attacked and Set on Fire Over Alleged Quran Burning Incident - Report

In the early morning hours of Thursday, the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad experienced a destructive assault when a multitude of protestors, angered by an alleged planned Quran burning, infiltrated the premises and set it ablaze. This information comes from a collection of reports and video evidence.

The unfolding situation commenced when supporters of Shi’ite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr orchestrated a protest reacting to a planned second Quran burning in Sweden, orchestrated by an Iraqi Christian immigrant, as reported by Reuters.

In a related incident in June, this same Iraqi man publicly burned a Quran outside a Stockholm mosque during a significant Muslim holiday, which set off waves of anger across the Islamic community globally, as per information provided by the Associated Press (AP).

According to the AP, while the act of burning the Quran is universally regarded as blasphemous amongst Muslims, Sweden discontinued its blasphemy laws in the 1970s, which bolstered the country’s stance on the right to hold public demonstrations.

Law enforcement in Sweden typically allows protests to take place as long as they do not jeopardize public safety. Mats Eriksson, a police spokesperson, confirmed to AP that a demonstration was permitted outside the Iraqi Embassy in Stockholm on Thursday, but he could not verify whether the demonstration involved the burning of the Quran.

AP distributed video footage showing large smoke clouds ascending from the Swedish embassy after fires were allegedly started inside the premises.

The Iraqi government expressed condemnation of the burning of the Swedish embassy, but also issued a stern warning to the Swedish government that “any repetition of the incident involving the burning of the Holy Qur’an on Swedish soil would necessitate severing diplomatic relations.” This statement was made public by the Iraqi prime minister’s office and was reported by Reuters.

The Swedish ambassador was dismissed from Iraq on Thursday, according to a report by Reuters. The Iraqi charge d’affaires in Sweden has also been called back by the Iraqi government.

In a statement given to AP, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said, “We condemn all attacks on diplomats and staff from international organizations. Attacks on embassies and diplomats constitute a serious violation of the Vienna Convention. Iraqi authorities have the responsibility to protect diplomatic missions and diplomatic staff.”

Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billström announced his intent to summon Iraq’s charge d’affaires in Stockholm over the apparent failure of Iraqi authorities to safeguard the embassy and its personnel.

“The government is in contact with high-level Iraqi representatives to express our dismay,” said Billström.

The AP reported that Iraq’s Foreign Ministry said that law enforcement in Iraq will launch an investigation into the attack on the embassy and that those responsible will be held accountable.
