According to Stockholm law enforcement, permission has been granted for a protest this weekend, in which an individual has expressed intentions to burn both the Torah and the Bible outside the Israeli Embassy located in Sweden’s capital.

Israeli officials have called upon the Swedish government to halt this protest, slated for Saturday in front of the embassy. This situation arises after Sweden recently drew significant critique from Muslim nations for sanctioning protestors to burn the Quran during small anti-Islam demonstrations.

In response to last month’s Quran-burning outside a Stockholm mosque, carried out by an Iraqi immigrant, the individual who lodged the request for the upcoming protest has expressed his desire to burn the Torah and the Bible outside the Israeli Embassy.

Stockholm police’s approval of the demonstration was revealed in a document obtained by The Associated Press. The demonstration, which is expected to draw three participants, is scheduled for 1 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Saturday, outside the Israeli Embassy.

Sweden’s constitution robustly protects the right to public demonstrations. Following the abandonment of blasphemy laws in the 1970s, the police grant permissions for public gatherings based on their assessment of the potential for major disruptions or threats to public safety.

In an email to the AP, Stockholm police made it clear that their authority is limited to granting permission for public gatherings, not specific actions taking place therein. They stated, “We do not give permission for different actions. We give permission to hold a public meeting! That’s an important difference.”

Israeli leaders have called on Sweden to cancel the event. Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed his sorrow, stating, “I condemned the burning of the Quran, sacred to Muslims world over, and I am now heartbroken that the same fate awaits a Jewish Bible, the eternal book of the Jewish people.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen urged Swedish officials to “prevent this despicable event and not to allow the burning of a Torah scroll.” Similarly, Israel’s Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef asked Sweden’s symbolic monarch to intervene, condemning the planned protest and the recent Quran-burning incident.

In a letter, Yosef urged, “By preventing this event from occurring, you would send a powerful message to the world that Sweden stands firmly against religious intolerance and that such acts have no place in a civilized society.”

The Council of Swedish Jewish Communities voiced strong objections to the police decision to permit the protest. They warned that “our tragic European history links the burning of Jewish books with pogroms, expulsions, inquisitions and the Holocaust.”

Last month’s Quran-burning outside a Stockholm mosque during Eid al-Adha, a major Muslim holiday, was carried out by an Iraqi Christian immigrant. This act caused outrage in the Islamic world and was followed by a similar protest held outside the Turkish Embassy, which has added complexity to Sweden’s ongoing attempts to secure membership in NATO.

Just this Wednesday, the U.N.’s leading human rights body overwhelmingly approved a measure urging nations to intensify efforts to combat religious hatred in the aftermath of these Quran-burning incidents.

These protests highlight the line between absolute freedom of speech and an act of hate. No matter where one falls on the issue, these protests are clearly an attack on sacred religious beliefs and a people in what is a complete affront to human decency.
