Archaeologists in Jerusalem have recently unveiled steps leading into the renowned Pool of Siloam, where, according to biblical records, Jesus Christ miraculously restored sight to a blind man over 2,000 years ago.
This significant discovery underscores the interconnection of religious scripture and historical evidence.
Ze’ev Orenstein, the director of international affairs for the City of David Foundation, shared his enthusiasm about the find to Fox News Digital: “It’s exciting to be a part of a story that’s bigger than ourselves — to be a part of bringing a story to life that has significance not for millions, but for billions.”
This archaeological revelation is the result of a collaboration among the Israel Antiquities Authority, the Israel National Parks Authority, and the City of David Foundation. Their endeavors began in 2004 after a water pipe burst south of the Temple Mount, spurring excavation efforts in the historical heart of Jerusalem.
During recent excavations, the teams unearthed a set of eight steps at the site.
This discovery offers a glimpse into a time when the Pool of Siloam was an epicenter of religious rituals.
Historically, the pool’s creation dates back over 2,700 years to the era of Judean King Hezekiah.
Recognizing the threat of Assyrian aggression, Hezekiah ordered the creation of a tunnel to channel water from the Gihon Spring into Jerusalem.
This tunnel subsequently led to the construction of several water reservoirs, one of which was the Second Temple pool familiar to Jesus.

Reflecting on the monumental significance of this discovery, Orenstein noted: “The ongoing excavations within the City of David — the historic site of Biblical Jerusalem — particularly of the Pool of Siloam and the Pilgrimage Road, serve as one of the greatest affirmations of that heritage and the millennia-old bond Jews and Christians have with Jerusalem.”
He further added, “There is no half mile that means more to more people that affirms Jerusalem’s biblical heritage not simply as a matter of faith, but as a matter of fact.”
Rev. Johnnie Moore, president of the Congress of Christian Leaders, had previously highlighted the significance of such findings.
Speaking to Fox News Digital, he said, “In the Pool of Siloam, we find evidence of history preserved for us, revealed at just the right time.” Moore emphasized the tangible connection this discovery establishes between scripture, geography, and Israel’s undeniable ties to Jerusalem.
While a portion of the pool had been open to visitors in the past, the City of David Foundation has plans to allow public access to the entire site upon completion of the ongoing excavation project.
Orenstein encapsulated the sentiment surrounding the discovery: “It’s a big responsibility. And it’s also a big privilege, and the best is truly yet to come.”
