NextImg:Split Over Israel Leads to Democrat Party Civil War, Experts Fear Divide Will Last a 'Generation'

A recent report from the Wall Street Journal reveals a growing split within the Democratic Party over Israel and Palestine, which may potentially tear the party apart for a “generation.”

This divide has moved into the public spotlight, showing a lack of unity among Democrats who are now clashing over a topic that previously united them.

The article titled “The Left Is Tearing Itself Apart Over Israel,” published last Tuesday, exposes a deep disagreement that has turned friends within the party into opponents. Big names in progressive and leftist circles are worried as they see their party becoming a stage for ideological battles.

Anti-Defamation League CEO, Jonathan Greenblatt, described the situation as “an incredibly clarifying and terrifying moment” for many progressive Jews.

He shared how they’ve reached out to him, expressing shock and sadness over feeling left behind by the people and causes they once supported, especially when it comes to Israel.

On the other side, those supporting the Palestinian cause feel ignored. Waleed Shahid, formerly with the Justice Democrats, talked about how Arab-American, Muslim-American or Palestinian members feel invisible within the party. Their call for equal treatment for Palestinian and Israeli lives seems to be unheard, making them feel uncared for.

This disagreement is also affecting the party’s leadership, with President Biden’s popularity dropping among “young and minority voters.” A recent Gallup poll showed an 11 percentage-point drop in Biden’s approval rating among Democrats to 75%, marking the lowest point of his presidency and bringing his overall rating down to 37%.

Maryland state delegate and congressional candidate, Joe Vogel, pointed out the moral issue at hand, saying, “It shouldn’t be that hard to condemn the murder of innocent women and children and seniors, yet many have either said nothing or equivocated.” His statement highlights the serious problem within the party.

Do you think the Democratic party will unite in time for the election next year?

The debate has even reached the White House, with President Biden facing criticism from Muslim leaders for not showing enough concern for Palestinians.

The tension led to a top State Department official resigning in protest, and Secretary of State Antony Blinken trying to calm the internal disagreement, showing how deep this ideological split runs, threatening the unity of the Democratic Party.
