David Hand, the son of the original director of the 1937 “Snow White” animated classic, has expressed strong reservations about Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved fairy tale.
David Hand, now 91, bears the same name as his father and has spent a significant part of his life connected to the Disney legacy, having even worked as a designer for Disney in the 1990s.
The 1937 original animation came under scrutiny by lead actress Rachel Zegler, who labeled it as “extremely dated.”
Zegler commented that in the new iteration, Snow White is “not going to be saved by the prince,” taking a swipe at the original by suggesting Snow White fell for “a guy who literally stalks her.”
Set photos leaked to the media also revealed a notable change – the iconic seven dwarfs being transformed into “magical creatures,” a move purportedly to “avoid reinforcing stereotypes.”
Hand shared his feelings in a candid interview with The Telegraph, where he remarked, “I mean, it’s a whole different concept, and I just totally disagree with it, and I know my dad and Walt would also very much disagree with it.”

He emphasized that movies like “Snow White” are vital art forms, adding that the original film was crafted “with good taste when it was written.”
Expressing his disappointment with the changes, Hand stated, “They change the stories, they change the thought processes of the characters, they just aren’t the original stories anymore.”
Drawing attention to the shift in narrative frameworks, Hand criticized the trend, saying, “They’re making up new woke things and I’m just not into any of that.”
He further noted, “There’s no respect for what Disney did and what my dad did… I think Walt and he would be turning in their graves.”
In line with the sentiment shared by many traditionalists and fans of the original classics, Hand highlighted the significance of these tales and encouraged studios to invent new tales instead of modifying existing masterpieces.
He said, “Pick on something else… create new characters, if you’re gonna do this, but don’t destroy or try to destroy something that is, that is a classic and is a beautiful piece.”
