San Francisco continues its death spiral with another long time business closing down. The once-thriving La Cocina food hall in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district has announced its impending closure.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, restaurateurs have pointed to rampant drug dealing, public defecation, and crime cluttering the sidewalks as detriments to their patrons’ experience.

La Cocina, well-known for its non-profit-driven support for “women from communities of color and immigrant communities,” has been a victim of the city’s escalating public disorder.

Algerian immigrant and chef Wafa Bahloul, a beneficiary of La Cocina’s mission, conveyed that shuttering her business was the “best solution” amidst these challenges. Bahloul stated, “the sidewalks outside were too dangerous and unpleasant to lure people to dinner as night fell.”

Her husband had even been witness to a shooting outside the food hall. She also reported commonplace encounters with drug use, drug dealing, public defecation, and trash littering the area outside La Cocina.

Another glaring concern was the annual $275,000 spent on security to maintain order during operation hours, a cost the food hall could hardly bear.

The San Francisco Chronicle raised the question of survival for other businesses in the city if La Cocina, a venue “widely celebrated” in media outlets like Forbes and “NBC Nightly News,” couldn’t withstand the deteriorating public order.

La Cocina’s security guards, Damian Morffet and Ron Haysbert, pinpointed City Hall and the police department as major contributors to the food hall’s downfall.

They bemoaned the current state of public order, stating that drug users and dealers are allowed to behave without restraint, creating an uncomfortable environment for families and customers.

Morffet stressed to the Chronicle, “If the police were consistent with their patrols and efforts, people would come out here at night.” Haysbert added, “The cops drive by and look, and they don’t do anything.”

The guards recalled a recent incident where a man publicly defecated outside La Cocina, causing a lingering stench that discouraged customers. “This is not the city we grew up in,” Morffet said, highlighting the downward spiral of San Francisco’s public order.

“They said when they were growing up, drug dealers and people using drugs felt uncomfortable in public — but now they’re given free rein over public sidewalks while families, kids and people just trying to get lunch are made to feel uncomfortable.”

Adding to the city’s dubious reputation, the Chronicle has previously reported that San Francisco has become a haven for open-air drug dealing, enabling some dealers to amass an income of $350,000 annually.

In response to this issue, San Francisco Board of Supervisors Member Matt Dorsey has urged City Hall to scrutinize the city’s justice system. His concerns are centered on reports that even high-earning drug dealers can still access taxpayer-funded legal services from the Public Defender’s Office. Dorsey took to Twitter on Tuesday to question this practice.

However, despite multiple attempts by Fox News Digital to obtain a response, neither San Francisco City Hall nor the San Francisco Police Department offered any comment.
