Canal Productions, owned by actor Robert De Niro, has been ordered to pay its former employee, Graham Chase Robinson, $1.2 million after a court ruled in favor of Robinson in a gender discrimination and retaliation lawsuit.
Robinson, 41, was awarded two separate payments totaling $632,142.96 each according to The Daily Mail.
The lawsuit started over claims of gender discrimination and detrimental career effects after Robinson left her job.
The $1.2 million represents four years of earnings, based on her last salary with De Niro’s company.
The court case revealed a difficult workplace for Robinson. She claimed that she was treated unfairly compared to male employees and struggled to find work after her time at De Niro’s company.
Among her allegations were derogatory remarks by De Niro and a hostile work environment.
De Niro had also filed a lawsuit against Robinson for $6 million, accusing her of stealing airline miles. However, the court found her not responsible.
Robinson showed relief and happiness at the jury’s decision, smiling at them as the verdict was announced.
David Sanford, Robinson’s lawyer, expressed his satisfaction with the jury’s decision. “We are delighted that the jury saw what we saw and returned a verdict in Chase Robinson’s favor against Robert De Niro’s company, Canal Productions,” he said. He pointed out that the jury completely dismissed De Niro’s claims against Robinson.
While De Niro was not present for the verdict, his lawyer, Richard Schoenstein, seemed to see the judgment as a compromise, noting the difference between the $12 million sought and the $1.2 million awarded.
Schoenstein was relieved that De Niro was not personally held responsible, stating, “It is a dispute between an employee and their former employer.”
Robinson’s career at Canal Productions began in 2008 as an executive assistant with a $75,000 salary and ended in 2019 as the VP of Production and Finance, earning $300,000.
Her allegations included being called derogatory names by De Niro and facing different expectations than male colleagues.
She claimed that female employees were expected to be available for De Niro at all times, a demand not made of male employees.
The lawsuit took a heavy toll on Robinson, as her psychiatrist testified, leading to severe psychological conditions.
However, a psychiatrist representing De Niro described Robinson as “narcissistic and paranoid.”
