Swimming champion Riley Gaines responded to Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) over the weekend, following a heated panel discussion on HBO’s “Real Time” with host Bill Maher.

During the discussion, Porter suggested that Gaines was speaking up to draw attention to herself.

British political commentator Piers Morgan defended Gaines on the show, causing the segment to go viral.

Gaines took to Twitter to address Porter’s comments, stating, “Hey @RepKatiePorter I’m not speaking up for myself…I’m done playing sports. I’m not fighting for me. I’m actually supposed to be in dental school this year. But I’ve changed my life plans because I see what’s at stake if someone doesn’t fight for the present and next generation.”

She further questioned why women were the ones fighting against sex-based protections, expressing her confusion over the issue.

The controversy came after Gaines faced backlash from radical transgender activists during her visit to San Francisco State University.

Gaines was advocating for the rights of female athletes when she was attacked by the activists.

During the televised discussion, Porter stated that she “strongly” disagreed with Gaines, prompting Morgan to press her for more information.

Porter began to say that sporting bodies should make the decisions about athletes, but Morgan cut her off, asking what Gaines had said that was wrong.

Porter suggested that Gaines was using the situation to gain likes and clicks, to which Morgan firmly disagreed.

He argued that Gaines was standing up for women’s rights, fairness, and equality, mentioning her competition against Lia Thomas, a transgender athlete.

Morgan pointed out the significant time difference between Thomas and biological female athletes during an NCAA championship race, stating that it couldn’t be fair.

In response to Porter’s assertion that Gaines was speaking up for herself, Morgan argued, “I think she’s speaking for pretty much every female athlete in the world.”
