Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt and North Carolina Representative Dan Bishop recently introduced the Censorship Accountability Act, a bill that aims to grant citizens the ability to sue specific federal employees for unlawfully censoring their online content.
Senator Schmitt highlighted the bill’s purpose, stating, “The Censorship Accountability Act is designed to deter censorship in the first place, but if officials violate the First Amendment again, the Act gives the American people recourse.”
This legislation comes in the wake of Facebook’s release of subpoenaed documents that revealed the Biden administration’s pressure on the social media platform to censor or restrict content, particularly posts related to anti-vaccine sentiments.

Schmitt expressed concerns about the implications of the administration’s actions, saying, “The Biden Administration’s brazen collusion with social media companies to censor speech should frighten every American regardless of their political affiliation. When I served as Missouri’s Attorney General, I filed the landmark Missouri v. Biden lawsuit, which exposed all of this censorship.”
Schmitt further emphasized his commitment to preserving free speech and accountability, stating, “Now, I’m taking action to ensure that it never happens again. This legislation would allow citizens to hold individual bureaucrats accountable if they collude with social media companies to censor speech.”
“I’ve already filed legislation that would hold the social media companies accountable if they censor speech, now I’m working to hold the federal government actors accountable,” he continued.
Representative Bishop echoed similar sentiments, asserting that the bill would finally enable Americans to sue federal employees who infringe upon their First Amendment rights.
He criticized the “Censorship Industrial Complex” and emphasized the need for those seeking to suppress freedom of speech to be held accountable in a court of law.
The documents obtained by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan shed light on communications between Meta officials and Biden administration personnel and advisors.
According to Jordan, in the summer of 2021, the White House engaged in a nationwide push to promote Covid-19 vaccination, which included a secret campaign to encourage Facebook to take a more aggressive stance in policing vaccine-related content, even if the information was true.
The Censorship Accountability Act proposed by Senator Schmitt and Representative Bishop aims to address concerns about government interference in online discourse and safeguard citizens’ rights to express their opinions freely. It is time for censorship and the deep state to be over.
