In a recent CBS News/YouGov poll conducted from October 4-6, results indicate that a significant portion of GOP voters want the next House speaker to display loyalty to former President Donald Trump and be supportive of the ongoing impeachment investigation into former President Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.
The poll, which surveyed 2,155, showed 59% of Republican participants believe the next House speaker should show allegiance to Trump.
A notably higher percentage, 72%, are of the opinion that the speaker should back the corruption investigation into Biden.
58% of respondents also voiced the opinion that the next House speaker should also be open to finding middle ground with the Democrats.
The race for the House speaker’s role sees House Majority Leader Steve Scalise from Louisiana and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio as contenders.
In September then-House Speaker Kevin McCarthy asked House committees to start impeachment investigations into Biden’s ties with his family’s overseas business transactions. The first impeachment hearings began shortly thereafter.
Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) introduced a successful motion to ‘vacate the chair’ earlier this month that ended McCarthy’s tenure as speaker.
