The mystery surrounding the 48-hour disappearance of Carlee Russell, a 25-year-old woman from Hoover, Alabama, remains as local authorities have yet to clarify whether an active search for a suspect or a missing child is underway. Russell, who disappeared after alerting a 911 operator of a toddler she spotted along the interstate, recently returned home.
In their first public interview aired on Tuesday, Carlee Russell’s parents stressed the importance of ongoing investigations to track down the “abductor” implicated in their daughter’s disappearance.
“Carlee has given detectives her statement so that they can continue to pursue her abductor,” Russell’s mother, Talitha Robinson-Russell, stated during the interview on NBC’s “Today” show.
NBC reporter Priscilla Thompson questioned the parents on whether they believed the abductor was still at large. “Absolutely,” confirmed Robinson-Russell, with the nod of affirmation from Carlee Russell’s father, Carlos Russell.
On Monday, the Hoover Police Department issued their latest report on the case, which did not specify whether an active search for suspects or a missing child was in process. Fox News Digital reached out to the Hoover police on Tuesday for further clarification.
Robinson-Russell also spoke of the hardship faced during the two-day ordeal, characterizing some individuals’ behavior as maliciously deceitful.
“There were actually so many calls and texts from people who maliciously lied to us. I just didn’t know people could be so evil,” Robinson-Russell said. “She’s having to deal with the trauma of people just making completely false allegations about her.”
On Russell’s return, her mother was careful to avoid sharing details due to the ongoing investigation but stressed that her daughter had to fight physically and mentally for her life.
“She found her way back to us. However, we can’t discuss the details of that,” Robinson-Russell said, referring to the ongoing investigation. “She definitely fought for her life. There were moments when she physically had to fight for her life. And there were moments when she had to mentally fight for her life.”

The police timeline disclosed that Russell had departed her workplace at The Summit in Birmingham at around 8:20 p.m. on July 13. After ordering food from a nearby business at The Colonnade, she proceeded to travel there. The police are attempting to piece together her movements from when she left The Colonnade until her 911 call at 9:34 p.m.
Russell reported spotting a male toddler along I-459 during her 911 call and a subsequent call with a relative. She vanished after these conversations. Investigators are currently examining traffic camera footage showing Russell’s car pulling over on I-459 before she disappeared.
“Carlee’s 911 call remains the only timely report of a child on the interstate,” the police reported.
Upon being dispatched, Hoover Police officers arrived at the scene within five minutes, locating Russell’s wig, cell phone and purse with her Apple Watch inside on the roadway near her vehicle.
“Her vehicle is unlocked, running, all her personally belongings except for her phone,” an officer told dispatch on a call aired on NBC News Tuesday.
The Crimes Against Persons Unit initiated an investigation immediately, with a multitude of local, state, and federal agencies offering personnel and resources.
Russell returned to her residence on foot at 10:44 p.m. on July 15. Upon her return, she was promptly transported to UAB Hospital for evaluation, and detectives recorded her initial statement. The investigation, expected to continue over the next few days, still holds the contents of that statement under wraps.
Reflecting on her daughter’s return, Robinson-Russell expressed her profound joy and relief, albeit acknowledging the fragile state her daughter was in. “We tried to hug her as best we could, but I had to stand back because she was not in a good state,” she said.
There is still a lot of unknowns regarding Russell’s 48-hour ordeal. It seems very odd the police are not discussing a possible “abductor” or anything else regarding the case.
