NextImg:Orlando Police Officer Charged with Felony After After High Speed Chase

In a development that places a spotlight on police holding themselves accountable, Orlando Police Department Officer Alexander Shaouni has been charged with a felony and continues to be under criminal investigation for alleged misconduct during a traffic stop last month.

Officer Shaouni, who was relieved of his duties by the department following the incident, was reportedly caught driving his police cruiser at an excessive speed of 80 mph in a 45 mph zone. Notably, his vehicle’s sirens were not activated at the time of the incident. His actions prompted a Seminole County sheriff’s deputy to attempt a traffic stop.

Body camera footage reveals an exchange between Shaouni and the deputy. Shaouni, appearing contentious, queried the deputy: “What? I am going into work, my man. Why are you trying to pull me over as I’m going into work?” The deputy succinctly replied, “Because you’re going 80 in a 45.”

Undeterred, Shaouni challenged the deputy further, asking, “What does it look like I am dressed for?” However, when the deputy requested to see Shaouni’s driver’s license, the officer rejected the request, turned his back, reentered his police cruiser, and abruptly left the scene.

The incident has resulted in Shaouni facing a criminal investigation, with the Orlando Police Department confirming the details in a public statement: “Officer Shaouni has been relieved of duty pending the Seminole County Sheriff’s criminal investigation and OPD’s Internal Affairs investigation.”

Earlier this week, the 18th Circuit State Attorney’s Office revealed that Shaouni has been charged with “a felony count of fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement and a misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence,” as reported by the Orlando Sentinel.

Shaouni pleaded not guilty and was released from custody on a $9,000 bond.

This case underscores the critical importance of integrity and adherence to law, not just for citizens, but for those entrusted with the duty of enforcing it. As the judicial process proceeds, it serves as a stark reminder that no one is above the law.
