New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who campaigned on the platform of embracing sanctuary city status, is now sounding an alarm over the influx of migrants into the Big Apple.
It appears that the mayor’s stance has shifted after being forced to deal with actual migrants and some are calling out what they see as a hypocritical shift in his perspective.
In a recent Town Hall meeting on the Upper West Side, Adams issued a bleak forecast for New York City, declaring, “Let me tell you something, New Yorkers. Never in my life have I had a problem that I did not see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City.”
This dramatic change in tone is especially noteworthy given Adams’ prior advocacy for sanctuary city policies, which generally entail offering protection and support to undocumented immigrants.
Such policies have often been met with criticism from conservative quarters for potentially attracting migrants and creating an environment of non-enforcement of immigration laws.
Adams highlighted the staggering numbers, stating, “We’re getting 10,000 migrants a month.” He also underscored the financial implications, saying, “We had a $12 billion deficit that we’re going to have to cut. Every service in this city is going to be impacted. All of us.”
Mayor Adams placed the blame squarely on the shoulders of Republican Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who has been bussing migrants from the border to self-declared sanctuary jurisdictions.
However, the mayor also acknowledged the federal government’s role in relocating migrants from the border to various parts of the United States.

“What happened? Started with a mad man down in Texas, decided he wanted to bus people up to New York City,” Adams lamented. “One hundred ten thousand migrants. We have to feed, clothe, house, educate the children, wash their laundry sheets, give them everything they need, health care.”
This apparent shift in Mayor Adams’ position raises questions about the consistency of his stance on sanctuary city policies and the practical consequences of such policies when faced with the realities of a large influx of migrants.
Critics argue that Adams campaigned on the idea of welcoming migrants but is now struggling to manage the repercussions of that approach.
Furthermore many rightfully argue that the real blame lies with President Joe Biden for his open border immigration policies which they see as contributing to the massive surge of migrants at the border.
At the end of the day though it is tough to feel compassion for Mayor Adams or the residents of NYC who continue to vote people into office who have no business leading a dairy queen let alone a major US city.
They made their bed, now they need to deal with it. Unfortunately they’re taking the rest of us along for the ride.
