A new poll published by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) unveils a growing consensus among Americans— the belief in the traditional two-gender system is gaining strength.
In a comprehensive inquiry that sought views from over 5,400 citizens, PRRI’s poll delved into the subject of the gender binary, personal relationships with individuals who identify as LGBTQ, and the often-debated role of public schools in sex and gender identity education. The results are categorized across ethnicity, religion, and generation.
According to PRRI’s findings, 65% of Americans, a notable increase from 59% in 2021, uphold that genders are limited to the biological categories of male and female.
This view holds weight in the minds of the American people— 50% of the respondents expressed a strong belief in the gender binary, while another 15% concur but with lesser conviction. Contrastingly, a mere 14% of Americans robustly advocate for the existence of more than two genders.

When parsed along partisan lines, the data presents striking disparities. A whopping 90% of Republicans embrace the binary gender concept, with a solid 80% expressing unyielding conviction. Democrat agreement increased from 38% in 2021 to 44%, while independents also noted an increase from 60% to 66%.
Across every demographic surveyed, support for only two genders either rose or held steady. The most substantial surges were observed among “Other Protestants of Color” (escalating from 52% to 73%), Hispanic Catholics (climbing from 48% to 66%), and “Other non-Christian religions” (jumping from 42% to 55%).
White evangelicals were staunchly supportive (92%), overshadowing Jewish Americans who reflected the lowest support at 44%, even trailing the religiously unaffiliated at 46%.
Racially, black Americans emerged as the strongest endorsers of the gender binary (70%), with white and Hispanic Americans trailing slightly behind (66%). Multiracial Americans displayed less support (56%), while Asian Americans emerged as the least supportive (53%).
Surprisingly, every generation documented an increase in support for the traditional gender binary. This includes an eye-opening shift among Generation Z, whose support soared from 43% to 57% in just two years. Millennials also observed a significant rise in support to 60%.
Furthermore, 62% of Americans contend that “people spend too much time talking about their gender and pronouns.” This sentiment is echoed even by a majority of those who identify as or are closely related to someone who is lesbian, gay, or bisexual.
The poll ventured further into the realm of public education, probing views on the appropriateness of teaching same-sex relationships and transgender issues in schools. A substantial 34% of Americans— 55% of Republicans, 32% of independents, and 18% of Democrats— vehemently oppose instruction on same-sex relationships at all educational levels.
As for teaching transgender issues, only 7% find it suitable in early elementary school, 11% in late elementary school, 26% in middle school, and 18% in high school. However, the majority opinion, standing at 36%, strongly opposes this instruction at all K-12 stages.
Perhaps as a reflection of growing concerns over parental rights, 53% of Americans believe that public schools overstep their bounds. This sentiment was echoed by 79% of Republicans, 50% of independents, and 31% of Democrats.
Interestingly, the survey delved into media influence over gender. Not surprisingly, the majority of Americans who trust Fox News or conservative news sources believe gender is binary, 91% and 92% respectively.
Of Americans who do not trust any TV news sources, 65% said they think there are only two genders. As for Americans who trust mainstream news sources, 56% are less likely than the other groups to say that there are only two genders.
These findings offer a heartening insight into the pulse of our nation. It appears that despite growing pressure to conform to progressive ideologies, a majority of Americans continue to uphold the truth that there are only two genders, male and female.
