Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) expressed deep concern on CNN’s “The Lead” about the indictment of former President Donald Trump, stating that it was “heartbreaking” for the country to witness a former president facing a long list of criminal charges.
During the interview, Anchor Jake Tapper asked Pelosi about her reaction to the indictment and what stood out to her.
Pelosi responded, “It’s heartbreaking for our country to have a president of the United States with this list of charges against him.”
In her response, Pelosi also commended the January 6th committee, led by Benny Thompson and Liz Cheney, along with all the members and staff involved.
She praised their dedication to establishing a foundation of facts and the law, which led to a criminal referral to the Justice Department in December of the previous year (2022).
Pelosi acknowledged that it wasn’t their role to predict the actions of the Justice Department, but she found it interesting to see the similarities between the recommended charges by the committee and the subsequent criminal charges.
The congresswoman emphasized her appreciation for the committee’s courage and bravery, as well as the efforts of those currently making the case against the former president.
She said everyone, including the former president, is innocent until proven guilty and reiterated that no one is above the law.
Pelosi expressed concern about the assault on the rule of law in the country, describing it as a sorrowful departure from the principles established by the Founders.
