McDonald’s is saying goodbye to its iconic McFlurry spoons in an effort to be more environmentally friendly. On Tuesday, the fast-food giant announced that it will replace these spoons with smaller ones that are similar to those used for its sundaes.
This move is all part of McDonald’s larger plan to cut down on single-use plastic waste. According to the company’s website, they are committed to making this change while still keeping the McFlurry experience the same for customers.
McDonald’s detailed how the new system would work, stating, “Restaurants across the country are transitioning to a reusable spindle that’s swapped out and cleaned after each McFlurry is made. Once the mixing magic is complete, your McFlurry will be served with a smaller black spoon that uses less plastic (the same one that comes with our Sundaes).”
The company also added that this change is a “win-win,” helping to “reduce single-use plastic waste in restaurants—while giving customers the same delicious McFlurry they know and love.”
In other news, McDonald’s is also kicking off a “Free Fries Fridays” promotion. Starting October 27 and going until December 29, the chain is offering customers the chance to get a free order of medium fries ten times, according to a report by CNBC.
Last month McDonald’s announced it is bidding adieu to its self-serve drink stations, following closely on the heels of discontinuing its McCafé Bakery.
“This change is intended to create a consistent experience for both customers and crew across all ordering points, whether that’s McDelivery, the app, kiosk, drive-thru or in-restaurant,” McDonald’s said in a statement.
