Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada has decided to cancel a planned “child-friendly” drag queen show following demands from Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL). Gaetz raised concerns with Pentagon leaders, questioning their support for such events on military bases.
In response, the Department of Defense (DoD) took action, canceling the show.
Gaetz expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, tweeting, “HUGE VICTORY: The Department of Defense has CANCELED a scheduled ‘child-friendly’ drag show after I demanded answers from @SecDef Austin and General Milley!”
Breitbart News obtained a screenshot of a Facebook post from the Nellis LGBTQ+ Pride Council, which announced the cancellation.
According to the post, the DoD instructed Commanders not to host drag events on military installations, leading to the decision.
However, the LGBTQ+ Pride Council highlighted that other Pride Month-related activities, such as a panel, “Paint with Pride” event, a color run at the base gym, a mixer, and a commemoration walk, would still take place.
Gaetz had previously questioned Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley about their stance on drag queen shows and drag queen story hours on military bases.
Although Austin and Milley initially claimed they were unaware of such events, Gaetz presented them with evidence, including news articles documenting drag queen events on military bases.
Eventually, Austin and Milley acknowledged that they did not support these events on military bases, with Austin stating that they were not funded by the Department.
However, Gaetz recently sent a letter to Austin and Milley seeking clarification on why a drag show was planned for June 1 at Nellis Air Force Base.
NBC News reported that the show had been approved by Air Force leaders, but Austin and Milley intervened, informing the Air Force that DOD policy did not support funding drag shows on military bases.
Consequently, the Air Force was instructed to cancel or relocate the event off base.
Milley reportedly displayed visible anger regarding the decision to host the event on base.
An Air Force official confirmed NBC News that the Air Force would adhere to Secretary Austin’s congressional testimony, asserting that drag events would not be hosted on its installations or facilities.
Commanders were instructed to either cancel or move such events off base.
Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh stated that hosting drag events in federally funded facilities was deemed an unsuitable use of DoD resources in accordance with the DoD Joint Ethics Regulation (JER).
