Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) expressed her willingness to support the elimination of the mechanism used to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the House speaker position.
However, she will only do so if Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) assumes the role.
Boebert took to social media platform X to communicate her thoughts, adding, “The House has a lot of work ahead, let’s get this over with and take our country back!”
The mechanism in question, called the “motion to vacate the chair,” is a parliamentary procedure that’s infrequently invoked in U.S. history.
In 2019, the requirement was adjusted to demand a majority from either party to initiate this motion when Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) began her second tenure as speaker.
However, the most recent session of Congress reverted to the old rule, allowing a singular member to initiate the motion.
This week, the GOP-dominated House passed a temporary bill to prevent a government shutdown.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) then employed the “motion to vacate the chair.” Consequently, McCarthy was ousted following a 216-210 vote, in which eight Republicans aligned with the Democrats. McCarthy later declared he would not seek the speaker’s position again.
Both House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) and Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, have expressed interest in the speakership from the GOP end.
The Democrats, on the other hand, might support someone like Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY). A straightforward majority vote in the chamber would determine the winner, while Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) assumes the role of a provisional speaker.
Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) was among the Republicans who demanded a commitment to alter the “motion to vacate” procedure before endorsing any candidate.
He labeled the ousting of Speaker McCarthy as “DESPICABLE” and emphasized the challenges of governing under the looming threat from extremist factions.
In a mocking tone, Gaetz responded to these concerns, suggesting that making it tougher to remove either Speaker Jordan or Speaker Scalise would be a strange way for moderates to retaliate against him.
Lastly, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) weighed in, proposing the removal of the “motion to vacate” as he believes it hinders the speaker’s tasks.
McConnell emphasized the need for a functional government, stating that such mechanisms make effective governance challenging.
