Actor Kevin Costner, celebrated for his lead role in the popular series “Yellowstone,” has disclosed in legal documents that he is no longer “under contract” with the series, as reported by Us Weekly last Thursday.
Costner currently finds himself amidst a complicated divorce proceeding with Christine Baumgartner, his soon-to-be ex-wife, who seeks a hefty sum of approximately $248,000 per month for child support.
Us Weekly obtained court filings in which Costner disputes Baumgartner’s demands, citing his concluded contractual ties with “Yellowstone,” the pinnacle of his career, as the primary reason behind his inability to fulfill her substantial monetary requests.
Costner articulated in these documents, “I will earn substantially less in 2023 than I did in 2022. This is because I am no longer under contract for ‘Yellowstone,’ the principal source of my income last year.”
He added, “The fixed amount ‘pay or play’ and episodic compensation I received has ceased. Now, any compensation I earn from ‘Yellowstone’ will derive only from my back-end contractual participation rights, which amounts are not fixed.”
As the character John Dutton, Costner has played an integral role in the success of the series helmed by Taylor Sheridan. Reportedly earning more than $1 million per episode for the first five seasons, Costner’s future involvement in the series remains uncertain.
Sheridan has made no secret of his desire for Costner to set aside his personal discontent with Dutton, aiming to provide a satisfactory resolution for the show’s fan base.
However, it appears that Costner may not share this commitment, potentially leaving countless “Yellowstone” enthusiasts unsure of the series’ conclusion.
Despite this uncertainty, fans hope that Costner may yet choose to honor the role that has captivated millions and bring closure to the “Yellowstone” narrative.
