New York Supreme Court Judge Juan Merchan has denied a request from several media outlets to permit live camera coverage of Donald Trump’s arraignment in a Manhattan courthouse on Tuesday afternoon.

According to court documents, the judge has allowed a “limited number” of videographers, photographers, and radio journalists to be present but has rejected the motion to permit photos or live video during the court session. Five pool photographers will be allowed to take pictures for a few minutes before the hearing starts.

Judge Merchan stated in his ruling that he had considered “all relevant factors,” including the potential interference of camera coverage with the fair administration of justice, law enforcement activity, the defendant’s objections, and limitations associated with the courtroom’s physical structure.

However, he ultimately denied the motion, ruling that preserving the court’s impartiality was of greater importance than the “monumental significance” of the case and the “unparalleled public interest” it has generated.

Members of the media will be allowed to enter the courtroom, but electronic items such as cellphones will not be permitted.

Merchan specified that the use of cellphones, laptops, or other electronic devices would be strictly prohibited, with these devices needing to be turned off and secured out of public view while in the courtrooms.

In his ruling, Merchan permitted cameras to be used in the building’s hallway and approved the use of two overflow rooms for additional seating, addressing another request from media members.

He acknowledged that Trump’s arraignment has attracted “unparalleled public interest and media attention,” adding that the case involves a matter of “monumental significance” that “cannot possibly be disputed.”

Judge Merchan emphasized that the American public “rightly hungers for the most accurate and current information available.”

However, the interests of news organizations must be weighed against competing interests in this balancing exercise.

District Attorney Alvin Bragg, on behalf of the people of New York, had argued in the request that the presence of cameras in the courtroom raised various concerns, including the prejudicial impact of pretrial publicity on jurors, the truthfulness of witnesses, the trial judge’s responsibility to ensure a fair trial, and the impact on the defendant.

Judge Merchan was appointed to the New York State Court of Claims by Democratic Governor David Paterson in 2009 and began serving as an acting justice on the New York Supreme Court that same year.

The specifics of Trump’s indictment remain unknown, as they are under seal until the arraignment occurs.

It is worth noting that a potential guilty verdict in the case would not prevent Trump from running for the White House in 2024.
