GOP Representative Jim Jordan, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, is spearheading an inquiry into concerning allegations of what he describes as “bizarre” actions by an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent.
The incident has ignited serious concerns about potential abuses of civil liberties by the IRS, according to a news release on the House Judiciary Committee’s website.
In a letter addressed to IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel, Jordan detailed the accusations the committee had received.
The letter stated that an IRS agent, under the alias Bill Haus, allegedly provided false information to an Ohio taxpayer to gain entry into her home, intending to confront her about delinquent tax filings. The episode transpired on April 25 in Marion, Ohio, and is reported to have unfolded in a rather peculiar manner.
“The details of this field visit are bizarre,” Jordan’s letter said.
The agent, masquerading as Haus, informed the taxpayer that he was there to discuss matters related to an estate for which she served as the fiduciary.
The agent proceeded to divulge specific information about the estate that only the IRS could possess, subsequently persuading the taxpayer to allow him entry.
Once inside, he abruptly revealed that the true purpose of his visit was to address the taxpayer’s alleged failure to file several tax returns, rather than any issues with the estate.
Alarmed by the situation, the homeowner sought counsel from her attorney, who promptly instructed the agent to leave.
However, the agent responded aggressively, claiming, “I am an IRS agent, I can be at and go into anyone’s house at any time I want to be,” as recounted in the letter.
Prior to departing, he issued a menacing threat, warning that failure to pay the demanded sum would result in the freezing of all her assets and a lien being placed on her house.
Subsequently, the police were alerted to the situation and discovered that the individual posing as an IRS agent had used a fake name.
Suspecting a scam, the police contacted the agent and ordered him not to revisit the woman. In a curious turn of events, the agent then filed a complaint against the police.
Amidst conflicting information provided by the IRS regarding the taxpayer’s owed amount, she was eventually informed that no payments were due.
On May 30, her case was officially closed.
Jordan expressed deep concern over the behavior exhibited by the IRS agent, citing the use of an alias, deceptive tactics to gain entry into a taxpayer’s home, and the subsequent filing of an Inspector General complaint against a police officer involved in investigating the matter.
As part of his inquiry, Jordan demanded access to all documents and communication pertaining to the incident, as well as the complaint filed against the police.
This is not the first time Jordan has raised questions about the IRS’s adherence to proper procedures.
In a separate incident in May, he criticized the agency for scrutinizing the tax return of journalist Matt Taibbi shortly after Taibbi produced a piece on “Twitter Spaces” discussing government efforts to censor comments on the platform.
Jordan revealed that the IRS initiated an examination of Taibbi’s 2018 tax return on December 24, 2022—Christmas Eve and a Saturday. The timing coincided with Taibbi’s publication of the first installment of the Twitter Files, which detailed government abuses, as well as the ninth segment that exposed how federal agencies collaborated to manipulate speech on social media platforms.
According to Jordan’s letter, the IRS claimed to have sent Taibbi a letter on October 24, 2019, nine days after he filed his 2018 tax return, requesting verification due to identity theft concerns.
Allegedly, a second letter was sent on March 23, 2020. However, Taibbi and his accountant insist that they never received any such correspondence or any notification regarding issues with his tax return until three years later when the IRS conducted a field visit at his home.
Furthermore, the IRS failed to produce the purported letters when requested by the committee.
These incidents raise important questions about the conduct and practices of the IRS, casting doubt on its adherence to proper procedures and the protection of civil liberties.
Representative Jordan’s pursuit of answers reflects a commitment to ensuring that American taxpayers’ rights are upheld and that government agencies operate with transparency and accountability.
