Jacob Angeli-Chansley, known as the “QAnon Shaman” for his role in the 2021 Capitol riot, has entered the political arena by filing to run for Congress in Arizona’s 8th District.

His candidacy as a Libertarian for the 2024 election adds a twist to the race, especially since the current representative, Debbie Lesko of the GOP, isn’t running again.

Chansley became a widely recognized figure during the Capitol unrest in January of 2021, where he was seen shirtless, with face paint and horns.

His actions that day led to a 41-month prison sentence on charges like civil disorder and obstructing an official proceeding.

Chansley served about 27 months before being transferred to a halfway house.

Chansley will be competing against a lineup of experienced politicians.

This includes former Republican Representative Trent Franks, who won his previous eight terms by large margins; Abe Hamadeh, a former attorney general candidate; and Blake Masters, who has previously run for Senate.

With Lesko finishing her term in January 2025 and not seeking re-election, the seat is up for grabs.

This opens the door for a range of possibilities in a district that has seen stable Republican leadership.

Chansley’s controversial past and his new role as a candidate bring an unexpected element to the political landscape, reflecting the changing and often unpredictable nature of American politics.
