An Ohio man quickly changed course after leaving a curt note on a car he later found out belonged to a nun.

Darice Simpson, 29, had placed the terse message, which read “move your s**tbox!”, on the windshield of a red car parked outside his home, as reported by the Daily Mail.

According to Simpson, there’s an unwritten rule on his street that discourages people from parking their cars in front of others’ homes.

But the story took a surprising twist when Simpson saw an unidentified nun walking toward the car. Realizing his mistake, he ran over to remove the note. A video shared by Simpson shows both of them standing beside the car, smiling, signaling that peace had been restored.

Simpson explained the situation: “I was sitting outside cleaning my shoes and I saw the car parked outside.”

“I understand that I don’t own the street and that it’s not illegal, but we have an unwritten rule, you don’t do that. I just left it there for a laugh, I wasn’t genuinely angry,” he continued.

His initial brusqueness, Simpson said, was a product of his past, specifically his four-year term in prison. “I did four years in prison, so I tend to be a bit more aggressive in my encounters,” he admitted.

His recognition of the nun led to a change of heart. “I saw the nun walking down the street and I ran to get the note off the car, I said I’m so sorry sister. I hope you have a blessed day,” he recounted.

The encounter ended on a lighter note when the nun asked about the content of the message. Simpson revealed, “She asked what the note said, and I said that’s none of your concern, sister, but then I showed her and she laughed.”

This incident paints a multi-layered picture of human behavior. On one hand, it illustrates how unwritten societal rules can guide our actions and it demonstrates how personal history, like Simpson’s time in prison, can influence our interactions.

Then there’s the powerful role of religious and moral beliefs. Simpson, a devout Christian, expressed that seeing the “god-fearing” nun reminded him of his late grandmother, who was a minister, and inspired him to treat the nun with the “utmost respect.”

It’s a telling example of how, in a single moment, we can allow our emotions to lead to actions that we very well may regret. It is telling that it took seeing a nun to warrant the correction rather than realizing on his own that the note was unnecessary for anyone. Still, he did swiftly reconsider and undo his mistake.

Fortunately for Simpson, the nun was light-hearted with a sense of humor. This episode serves as a reminder that even in our missteps, there’s always room for grace, forgiveness, and a good laugh.
