Google Maps, a widely used navigation app, is getting a major upgrade with five new features using artificial intelligence (AI). These enhancements are intended to provide users with a more immersive and personalized experience, while at the same time raise concerns about data privacy.
One of the standout features is called “Immersive View,” which allows users to see their route in 3D from street level. This feature provides a detailed view of surroundings, landmarks, and directions before starting a journey, making it particularly useful in unfamiliar or complex areas.
“Google Maps Search” is another new feature powered by AI. It helps users find relevant locations based on their preferences, needs, and context. For example, if you’re looking for a restaurant, Google Maps will suggest options that match your taste, budget, and availability. User-submitted photos and reviews further assist in decision-making.
The navigation aspect of Google Maps is also getting an AI boost. It will provide improved lane guidance and real-time traffic information. Users will receive lane-specific instructions to prevent missed exits or turns, along with updates on road conditions, accidents, and congestion. The app will even suggest alternative routes for a smoother journey.

For electric vehicle (EV) owners, Google Maps will now display more information about EV charging stations. This includes the location of the nearest charging stations, the type of chargers available, charging speeds, and recent usage status.
Another noteworthy change is the renaming of the “Search with Live View” feature to “Lens in Maps.” This feature uses AI to identify and label objects and places in your camera view, such as ATMs, transit stations, restaurants, and stores. Users can ask for more information about these places and receive augmented reality directions.
While these new features promise to enhance the Google Maps experience, there’s a significant caveat: data privacy. Google collects a substantial amount of personal data from users of its services and Google Maps is no exception.
This data is used to primarily to target advertisements and influence your decisions. In the end, big tech knows your location, purchases preferences, and habits probably better than anyone else in your life. The price paid for having everything at the fingertip.
