The sudden and tragic death of actor Matthew Perry, widely known for his role as Chandler Bing on the TV show “Friends,” has struck a deep chord not just in Hollywood, but in homes around the world.
Perry died last Saturday, and the cause appears to be drowning in a hot tub, according to law enforcement. Importantly, no drugs were found at the scene, and no foul play is suspected. An autopsy is done, and we are awaiting toxicology results.
In a touching tribute that shows the depth of their bond, the ‘Friends’ cast told People: “We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.”
“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss. In time we will say more, as and when we are able. For now, our thoughts and our love are with Matty’s family, his friends, and everyone who loved him around the world,” the statement continued.
As tributes have been pouring in, it is clear that Matthew Perry was not just an actor but a cherished member of a family, a sentiment echoed by the show’s creators who praised his “giving and selfless heart.” NBC, which aired “Friends,” said Perry was a “true gift” whose legacy would endure for generations.
Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice, Chandler’s on-again off-again girlfriend posted on Instagram “What a loss. The world will miss you Mathew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”

Fans alike have been paying tribute to Perry in an impromptu memorial at the “Friends” apartment, 90 Bedford Street in West Village, New York City.
But Perry’s life wasn’t just about the highs of stardom; it also had its share of deep struggles. He spent more than $9 million fighting a long battle against substance abuse, admitting to taking as many as 55 Vicodin pills a day.
His recent memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” was an open account of his challenges, including 15 stays in rehab and 14 surgeries related to addiction. Perry said that the memoir was part of his healing process and that he had been sober since early 2021.
That year was marked by a Friends Reunion show watched and loved by many where Perry paid a touching tribute to his castmates.
Matthew Perry has left a huge hole in the hearts of many and will be surely missed.
