Former President Donald Trump is said to be considering a trip to Capitol Hill next week to potentially consolidate the divided Republican caucus as they are poised to select a new Speaker of the House.
This move follows the unprecedented ousting of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) from the speakership after Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) lodged a motion to vacate the position.
Notably, this marked the first instance in the annals of U.S. history where a sitting House speaker has been removed.
During the tumult, Trump, who in the past affectionately referred to McCarthy as “my Kevin,” largely stayed silent, advocating that Republicans should abstain from “fighting among themselves.”
As whispers grew regarding Trump’s potential interest in the Speaker’s role, insiders conveyed to The Messenger that the former president’s priority was primarily to heal the fractures within the party.
The uncertainties surrounding Trump’s decision were underscored by a source, who said, “Sometimes he believes he should go. Other times he’s telling people it might be a bad idea.”
History has not seen the election of a House speaker from outside its Congressional ranks, although the Constitution doesn’t specifically mandate Congressional membership.

Given the wafer-thin majority that the House Republicans currently possess, Trump would need to garner an almost unanimous vote.
This could be challenging even though a significant segment of House members continue to back him.
However, Politico highlighted potential complications.
The GOP’s internal conference regulations state that leaders must resign “if indicted for a felony for which a sentence of two or more years imprisonment may be imposed.”
With Trump facing a staggering 91 felony charges across four indictments, his role could be jeopardized.
It’s noteworthy that similar rules exist for Democrats, evidenced when Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) had to relinquish his chairmanship of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee following multiple felony charges related to an alleged bribery plot.
