Maryanne Trump Barry, the older sister of former President Donald Trump, has passed away at the age of 86 in her Manhattan home, according to the New York City Police Department. She was a former federal appellate judge who retired in April 2019.
In 2016, President Trump referred to her as a “highly respected judge,” though they disagreed on public policy issues.
In 2020, secret audio recordings of Maryanne Trump Barry expressing concerns about her brother’s principles and actions were made public by her niece, Mary Trump.
“Donald is cruel,” Barry said. “All he wants to do is appeal to his base. He has no principles. None. None. And his base, I mean my God, if you were a religious person, you want to help people. Not do this,” criticizing her brother’s policies, including the administration’s zero-tolerance policy on immigration that led to the separation of children from their parents during immigration court proceedings.
According to the Washington Post the former President responded at the time, “Every day it’s something else, who cares?”
The Washington Post’s story covering the recordings ran one day after a private memorial service for Robert Trump, the president’s younger brother, was hosted by the White House. Robert Trump died Aug. 15, 2020 at age 71.
During her legal career, Maryanne Trump Barry worked as a federal prosecutor and was nominated by President Ronald Reagan to the Federal District Court in New Jersey in 1983. President Bill Clinton appointed her to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 1999.
In 2017, shortly after her brother’s inauguration, she stopped hearing cases.
