In a press conference on Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a huge warning against potential looters following reports of attempted thefts in the aftermath of a near Category 4 hurricane that impacted the state this week.
Addressing the concerns of Floridians, DeSantis stated, “I’ve told all of our personnel at the state level, you protect people’s property, and we are not going to tolerate any looting in the aftermath of a natural disaster.”
DeSantis expressed his dismay at the audacity of individuals who would exploit such challenging circumstances, remarking, “it’s just ridiculous that you would try to do something like that on the heels of an almost Category 4 hurricane hitting this community.”
Governor DeSantis also emphasized the importance of residents’ right to protect their property, hinting at the state’s robust support for the Second Amendment.
He recalled seeing signs in various yards after similar events in the past that advocated for self-defense.
Drawing attention to the potential risks that looters might face, DeSantis warned, “I would say probably here: ‘You loot, we shoot.’”
DeSantis continued, “You never know what’s behind that door. If you go break into somebody’s house and you’re trying to loot, these are people that are going to be able to defend themselves and their families.”
He concluded his message by urging unity and collaboration during challenging times, “let’s all band together and lift people up and not take advantage of a difficult situation.”
The Governor words serve as a clear notice of Florida’s commitment to maintaining law and order, even in the wake of natural disasters.
