Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a new set of crime bills into law, aimed at keeping criminals off the streets and ensuring a safer community for the state’s residents.

The three bills focus on addressing bail reform, increasing penalties for fentanyl traffickers, and making certain crimes against children eligible for the death penalty.

DeSantis stated that Florida has experienced a 50-year record low crime rate, with double-digit year-over-year decreases in murder, burglary, and overall crime.

He emphasized the state’s commitment to maintaining law and order, keeping criminals in jail, and severely punishing pedophiles.

House Bill 1627 tackles bail reform by requiring the Florida Supreme Court to develop a uniform statewide bond schedule by year’s end.

The bill prohibits judges from setting lower bond amounts than the uniform state bond, prevents defendants arrested for violent or heinous crimes from being released before their first court appearance, and adds several crimes to the state’s list of “dangerous crimes.”

House Bill 1359 aims to crack down on “rainbow fentanyl” traffickers by making them eligible for life sentences, imposing a minimum 25-year sentence and a $1 million penalty, and classifying the possession, sale, or manufacture of fentanyl and other controlled substances resembling candy as a first-degree felony.

The governor also signed House Bill 1297, which imposes the death penalty on pedophiles committing sexual battery against children under 12 years old.

DeSantis expressed his willingness to take the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn judicial precedents that have shielded child rapists from the death penalty and denied victims and their families the opportunity to pursue ultimate justice.

In addition to these new bills, DeSantis signed a bill last month that changes the requirement for a death sentence from a unanimous jury vote to a majority decision of at least 8 out of 12 jurors.

This move further demonstrates the governor’s commitment to a tough-on-crime approach in the state of Florida.

The enactment of these bills showcases DeSantis’ dedication to maintaining a safe environment for Floridians and ensuring that criminals face appropriate consequences for their actions.

As the state continues to experience a decline in crime rates, these new laws aim to reinforce the message that Florida is committed to protecting its citizens and holding criminals accountable.
