NextImg:Expert Claims Lost Titanic Sub Passengers Knew, Like a Scene From a 'Horror Movie'

Marine engineer and underwater expert, Jose Luis Martin, shared his thoughts about the catastrophic events that likely transpired onboard the ill-fated Titan submersible.

The passengers probably had a brief window of understanding about what was about to happen before their worst nightmare materialized right in front of their eyes.

Martin compared the calamity to a scene from a “horror movie.”

He hypothesized that the Titan may have rapidly descended due to an electrical malfunction.

This would have sent the vessel and its occupants plunging towards the ocean floor in total darkness.

According to The New York Post, the passengers would have been hurled against each other, experiencing free fall for a period ranging from 48 to 71 seconds before the submersible succumbed to the overwhelming pressure.

In an interview with Spanish news outlet NIUS Martin said, “During the controlled immersion of the Titan, there must have been an electrical fault, which left the craft without thrust.”

He added, “Without thrust, the weight of the passengers and the pilot (about 400 kilograms), which was focused on the front end close to the view port, would have disrupted the Titan’s longitudinal stability.”

He continued to explain the dire sequence of events, “At this point, the submersible begins to fall headlong towards the seafloor, and with control and safety functions damaged, it can no longer be maneuvered.”

This critical malfunction would have thwarted any attempts by Oceangate CEO Stockton Rush to release weights and initiate an emergency ascent.

Once the balance of the submersible was compromised, Martin contended, the passengers and pilot would have been rendered utterly helpless to rectify the situation.

“The Titan changes position and falls like an arrow vertically because the 400 kilos (880 pounds) of passengers that were at the porthole unbalance the submersible. Everyone rushes and crowds on top of each other. Imagine the horror, the fear, and the agony,” he said.

He grimly added, “It had to be like a horror movie.”

Martin noted the stark realization likely dawning on the passengers during their ordeal.

“In that period of time, they are realizing everything,” he said. He speculated the entire course of events probably unfolded over an approximately 48-71 second timeframe. “And what’s more, in complete darkness.

It’s difficult to get an idea of what they experienced in those moments … After those 48 seconds, or one minute, the implosion and instantaneous sudden death occurs.”
