NextImg:Entertainment Industry Quietly Hiring for AI Positions During Strike, Inciting Writers and Actors

In the wake of the ongoing Hollywood strike, led by actors and writers, the increasing deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) specialists by entertainment companies has caused mounting concern.

While there is an extensive array of issues being addressed in the strike, ranging from pay to benefits, the rising dominance of AI in the industry has sent shockwaves throughout the entertainment world.

Members of the acting fraternity have voiced concerns over the potential of AI technology to create replica images and depictions of them without their explicit consent.

Concurrently, writers have advocated for restrictions on the use of AI in the creation or editing of scripts.

In a SAG-AFTRA rally hosted in Times Square, notable actor Bryan Cranston directed his comments towards Disney CEO Bob Iger.

He said, “We will not be having our jobs taken away and given to robots. … We will not have you take away our right to work and earn a decent living.”

Cranston added, “And, lastly and most importantly, we will not allow you to take away our dignity.”

On Disney’s careers website, a notable listing is for a senior vice president role that focuses on postproduction and innovation for Disney Branded Television, a producer of children and family content.

Offering a salary range of $270,500 to $371,900, the role requires candidates to “champion the constant evolution of our tools and processes across all aspects of the development pipelines. Be on the leading edge of technology developments, like Artificial Intelligence, and work to deliver solutions to improve processes like speed-to-market, content quality, efficiency, and cost.”

The Hollywood Reporter has also spotlighted a job posting from Sony for a senior research scientist and manager specializing in AI ethics.

The role, with a salary ranging from $170,000 to $210,000, involves guiding a multinational research team working on ambitious AI projects and providing “advice and consultation for business units on AI ethics, managing cross-functional stakeholder relationships.” The team, based in the U.S., Japan, and Switzerland, emphasizes fairness, transparency, and accountability in AI.

There is no getting away from the impacts of AI in the future across all industries. It remains to be seen how this will all flush out and the impact AI will have on the future of entertainment.
