Louisiana Tech linebacker Brevin Randle learned his fate today for his disturbing act during Friday night’s football game where he appeared to stomp on UTEP offensive lineman Steven Hubbard’s neck. Randle is faced with indefinite suspension.
The referee overseeing the game failed to penalize Randle for his actions. However, the episode did not go unnoticed. Television cameras captured the troubling moment, leading to an uproar among social media users who called for accountability.
Addressing the incident, Louisiana Tech athletics director Eric Wood confirmed in a statement to ESPN, “Coach [Sonny] Cumbie and I met with Brevin Randle today and informed him of his indefinite suspension due to the regrettable incident against UTEP last night. Brevin, in our conversation, recognized the gravity of his actions and fully comprehends the resulting repercussions.”
The statement continued, “Our University, athletic department, and football program are pillars of culture, class, and competitive excellence, and sadly, we fell short of those standards in that fleeting moment.”

After the game, UTEP coach Dana Dimel shed some light on the referee’s oversight. He recalled to the El Paso Times, “The referee, for whom I have great respect, approached me during halftime and, in a very professional manner, admitted he overlooked the incident.”
“It’s part of the game’s unpredictable nature,” Dimel continued. “I commend the official for his honesty. It was truly a class act.”
Randle, a senior at Louisiana Tech, has proven his mettle on the field with 46 total tackles and two sacks this season.
Despite the controversy, Louisiana Tech secured a 24-10 victory. The team’s success was highlighted by a remarkable 67-yard punt return touchdown by Smoke Harris.
The game began with Tyre Shelton’s impressive 1-yard rushing touchdown, a result of an 85-yard reception and dash by Cyrus Allen. Bulldogs’ quarterback Jack Turner also showed his prowess, completing 9 out of 20 passes, including one that resulted in a touchdown.
Shelton showcased his skills, wrapping up the game with a commendable 104 rushing yards achieved in 16 carries.
It is unclear whether Randle’s immediate ejection from the game would have had any impact in the outcome. It is commendable that the coach and university indefinitely suspended Randle. Any other outcome would have been reprehensible given the gravity of his actions.
