In a discussion with Fox News Digital, comedian John Crist offered a unique perspective on comedy in our politically divided and pandemic-ridden era.
He suggested that increased societal sensitivity has made comedy easier, not harder.
Crist stated, “Basically all comedy … is just saying things out loud that you’re not allowed to say,” suggesting the many taboo topics today simplify a comedian’s job.
According to him, controversial comments today can be ordinary observations that cross a line, contrasting with the more egregious statements needed to shock audiences in the past.
He linked the rise in comedy ticket sales and video views to the pandemic and the cultural shifts in 2020. When normal life is disrupted, comedy thrives, Crist argued.
He said, “When people are saying things to you on the Internet and on television and … you’re not allowed to think or be critical, that’s when comedy is really at its best.”
Crist noted that when information is forced upon us, comedians find it ripe for humor.

Despite being known for family-friendly material, he doesn’t avoid any topics in his work. He insists that his jokes should be well-crafted and something he can stand by.
The comedian also spoke about the importance of free speech and how trying to silence certain topics often results in more interest in them.
He added, “Freedom of speech is not removing things. It’s just intelligent people sorting things out for themselves.”
Regarding former President Trump, he said, “That’s what the left, I think, doesn’t understand. The more you try to silence these things, the more people that are in the middle are like, ‘Wait, what? I want to hear what he has to say.’”
Crist believes most people, regardless of political affiliation, are moderate and well-meaning.
However, he feels that extremists on either side stir up conflict.
Since January, Crist has been on his “Emotional Support Tour” across the country.
He described the tour as therapeutic for everyone after the pandemic.
His fans have thanked him for the laughter he brings, and he said he imagines other comedians feel the same way.
