Questions continue to emerge following Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to appoint U.S. Attorney David Weiss as a special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation.
Weiss, who previously faced criticism for a plea deal concerning Hunter Biden that didn’t withstand scrutiny, now finds himself with broader authority in the ongoing probe.
In light of this decision, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., expressed concerns, stating that Garland’s move is “part of the Justice Department’s efforts to attempt a Biden family coverup in light of [House Oversight Republicans’] mounting evidence of President Biden’s role in his family’s business endeavors involving significant sums from foreign nationals.”
CNN anchor Jake Tapper also weighed in on “CNN News Central” noting, “I think there are some legitimate questions about this whole situation.”
“I do think it’s fair to question why would U.S. Attorney Weiss be appointed to special counsel. Usually, a special counsel is an outside attorney. Usually, a special counsel is an outside attorney,” he said.
Tapper noted that this is not the first time a special counsel was appointed from the inside, referring to Durham. He affirmed it is the attorney general’s right to do that. However, Tapper said “it is odd.”
Tapper continued, “why would they stick with the person who was responsible for the ‘colossal failure’ of the Hunter plea deal?”
He also posed questions about Weiss’ jurisdictional powers and mentioned claims made by whistleblowers regarding Weiss’s contrasting statements about his authority in private and public.
Addressing these concerns, Tapper remarked, “The Justice Department and Weiss denied what the whistleblowers were saying, but this move makes it seem as though, well, maybe the whistleblowers were right.”
Tapper went on to make a statement that must have brought him some level of pain.
Tapper said, “So I do have a lot of questions about that, and I do think some of the political questions being raised by Republicans have merit.”
In an interesting twist, just a day earlier, Tapper described House Republicans’ findings on the Biden family receiving over $20 million from questionable foreign sources as “sleazy” but not criminal.
During an interview with Comer, Tapper sought clarity, asking, “what’s new in this memo?” while emphasizing he saw “no evidence” of President Biden’s involvement in any wrongdoing.
Comer, during this dialogue, voiced his apprehension over perceived impediments to the investigation.
“The Biden attorneys are obstructing, they’re intimidating witnesses, the DOJ will not cooperate with us, the FBI will not cooperate with us, the IRS will not cooperate with us,” he shared with Tapper.
An IRS whistleblower, Gary Shapley, further added to the concerns, suggesting Weiss was instructed by the DOJ that he couldn’t press charges against Hunter in specific regions. In response, Attorney General Garland refuted any interference in the probe.
Tapper’s statements are stunning causing one to wonder whether the left-wing media is beginning to turn on their beloved Biden.
