The Biden administration just hit one of the largest Christian schools in the country, Grand Canyon University (GCU), with what we believe is a politically motivated massive fine.
This action stands out because it’s much harsher than those given to schools involved in big sexual abuse scandals and is the largest fine ever by the U.S. Department of Education.
The administration’s move is seen as part of its ongoing clash with institutions that don’t align with its views.
GCU is known for being “private, Christian, and affordable.”
It’s grown from a small college to one of the biggest private universities in the U.S.
Remarkably, it’s done this without hiking up tuition for over 15 years.
You’d think this would win praise from the Department of Education, which aims to promote quality education.
But instead, GCU has found itself in the department’s crosshairs.
Things escalated when Richard Cordray, once connected to Senator Elizabeth Warren, took a leadership role in the department.
Since then, the department seems to have taken a tough stance against schools like GCU that challenge the norm of government-run schools and have had disputes over their nonprofit status.
The height of this conflict was when the department slapped GCU with a whopping $37.7 million fine in November.
This is way more than the fines against Penn State University and Michigan State University, known for their mishandling of major sexual abuse cases involving Jerry Sandusky and Larry Nassar.
The department’s case against GCU is about supposedly not telling PhD students clearly enough about the possibility of extra courses during their dissertation work.

Many see this charge as groundless.
The department made a big deal out of announcing the fine, accusing GCU of lying about the cost of its doctoral programs.
This big fine and the claims that came with it, without much proof or student complaints, make people wonder about the real reasons behind the department’s actions.
Some think that the department is using its power to unfairly target GCU, with the actual legal process being used as a form of punishment.
At the Goldwater Institute, there’s a push to get to the bottom of this.
If the government won’t clear things up about its unusual actions against GCU, there’s talk of taking legal action to force them to share information.
In the meantime, GCU is not backing down.
It continues to focus on providing affordable, quality education.
The university has been innovative in solving problems like the nursing shortage and preparing students for in-demand trades.
It’s also been a positive force in its local community.
This is in sharp contrast to public universities, which have been raising tuition fees significantly over the past two decades, even though they get government funds that GCU doesn’t.
This situation brings up big questions about what the current administration values.
It seems more focused on making schools follow certain ideologies, rather than recognizing the real contributions of universities like GCU to education.
GCU’s struggle against what many see as unfair treatment by the government highlights the current challenges in the education sector, especially in today’s politically charged atmosphere.
