In a startling incident in California, a driver lost control of their vehicle on Friday morning, resulting in a dramatic crash that saw the car flying over a swimming pool and partially lodging itself into a nearby house.
The incident unfolded around 7:10 a.m. near Murphy and Ashwood drives in San Mateo, a city south of San Francisco.
The vehicle involved was a Tesla SUV, and, remarkably, both the driver, described as approximately 70 years old, and a passenger emerged from the wreckage without injury. Equally fortunate, the house was unoccupied at the time.
San Mateo police Officer Jerami Surratt explained that the driver somehow lost control while descending a hill, leading the car onto a driveway, over an embankment, and astonishingly, soaring over a swimming pool before coming to rest halfway inside the house.
Surratt remarked, “You don’t normally see a car flying through the air over a swimming pool into a house. That is kind of a new thing.”
Due to the substantial damage caused by the crash, authorities have red-tagged the house for safety reasons. The police will conduct a thorough investigation to determine if any malfunction or loss of control within the Tesla played a role in this unusual crash.

Surratt explained, “If there was a malfunction with the vehicle or loss of control of the vehicle or anything like that that would lead to what happened here today.”
In the aftermath of the incident, neighbors expressed their relief that no one was inside the house at the time of the crash.
Lauren Carmichael, a neighbor, shared her thoughts, saying, “The woman that lives here, we know that she, every morning, she sits in her backyard and drinks her coffee. We’re like, ‘Thank God that she wasn’t home.'”
Doria Charlson, the daughter of the homeowner, added her perspective, noting the fortunate absence of her mother during this surreal ordeal.
“I’ve lived here for almost 30 years and have had no cars flying into our backyard before,” Charlson said. “Overwhelmingly, our family is just really glad that no one got hurt, which is pretty miraculous if you saw the car behind me.”
As the investigation continues, questions linger about the circumstances that led to a Tesla SUV taking flight and crashing into a home, leaving the community both astonished and grateful that no lives were lost in this extraordinary event.
