On Sunday, Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of Transportation, insinuated during a CNN interview that Colorado graphic designer Lorie Smith, who recently brought a case against the state’s anti-discrimination law, had only ventured into her line of business to stir up such a case.
Buttigieg’s comments came after CNN’s Dana Bash inquired if there was any substance to the Supreme Court’s argument in the case.
“There’s no merit, and it’s telling that there’s no evidence that this web designer was ever even asked to create a website for a same-sex wedding,” Buttigieg declared. “It seems this web designer only entered the wedding business to incite a case like this.”
In a further attempt to connect Smith’s legal action to a broader trend, Buttigieg argued that this case and some of the recent Supreme Court rulings have shared similarities.
He stated, “It’s a solution looking for a problem. These matters are being pushed to the courts and state legislatures with the clear intention of eroding the recently won equality and rights of the LGBTQ+ community.”
Continuing on this thread, Buttigieg claimed that such challenges divert attention from other pressing issues that Americans need relief and support for, “like the economic issues President Biden was emphasizing in his Bidenomics address.”
He further asserted that the ruling “reveals everything you need to know about this agenda.”
Buttigieg opined, “The fact that this was relief from a situation that may have never occurred in the first place tells you everything about this agenda to use every government instrument, courts, and legislatures, to erode these rights for people who were just trying to live their lives and seek equal treatment from businesses and the government.”

Contrarily, the Supreme Court‘s ruling favored Smith’s stance, holding that the state’s anti-discrimination law infringed on businesses’ rights to refuse service based on a customer’s sexual orientation.
Justice Neil Gorsuch, author of the majority opinion, asserted, “In this case, Colorado seeks to compel an individual to speak in a manner that aligns with its views but defies her conscience on a matter of great importance.”
He further affirmed that, “Tolerance, not coercion, is our Nation’s response. The First Amendment envisions the United States as a rich and complex place where all individuals are free to think and express themselves, not as the government dictates. As Colorado attempts to breach this pledge, the judgment is overturned.”
Recently, the Supreme Court also ruled on President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan and affirmative action.
In his majority opinion, Chief Justice John Roberts emphasized that any benefit granted to a student overcoming racial discrimination “must be tied to that student’s courage and determination.”
He continued that a benefit given to a student due to their “heritage or culture must be tied to that student’s unique ability to contribute to the university.” He emphasized that students should be “treated based on their experiences as individuals—not on the basis of race.”
