NextImg:Boston Mayor is Taking Heat for Compiling List of Critics and Sending to Police

Boston’s Mayor Michelle Wu, a member of the Democratic party, finds herself under scrutiny for alleged intimidation methods reminiscent of past political tactics.

Her administration has acknowledged its role in generating a roster of significant dissenters, subsequently supplied to local law enforcement.

The Wu administration confirmed the list’s creation in a statement by spokesperson Ricardo Patron to the Boston Herald.

Patron explained, “The list was made in response to a request from the Boston Police Department after the Mayor had been harassed and physically intimidated by individuals for several months outside her home, at city functions such as the annual neighborhood parks coffee hours, and at other public events.”

The list surfaced after a public records request made by Wu’s political opponents revealed an email exchange. The nature of the tactics employed by the Wu administration has drawn attention, stirring concerns over attempts to suppress or intimidate critics. Notably, a number of these critics have publicly demonstrated their dissent outside her residence.

Patron stated that the police request was made after certain individuals on the list repeatedly disrupted the Dorchester Day Parade, targeting Mayor Wu, her family, and staff.

The protesters were “yelling through megaphones at her and her children for nearly ninety minutes as they marched in the parade despite being asked by parade organizers to leave the parade route,” as reported by the Herald.

Patron further explained that following the parade on June 5, 2022, the Boston Police and City staff met on June 10 to formulate a safety plan for the subsequent Bunker Hill Day parade on June 12.

He stated that “the then-Captain of the District overseeing Charlestown asked for a list of individuals who had been involved in public disruption and harassment of the Mayor at the Dorchester Day Parade and outside her house. The email was sent as a follow-up immediately after that meeting.”

Do you think there was anything nefarious in the mayor sending the list to the police?

The list, as revealed by the Herald, was sent by Wu’s former Director of Constituent Services Dave Vittorini to Boston Police Capt. Robert Ciccolo.

It includes the names of individuals who have been vocal in their opposition to Wu, including Boston City Council at-large candidate Catherine Vitale, several anti-vaccine activists, and North End restaurant owners opposing Wu’s policies.

The list also mentioned “the Mendoza Brothers from the North End” and “A woman with the last name of Thuy who was arrested before.”

Wu’s assistants, Tiffany Chu and Brianna Millor, were copied in the email correspondence. This move came following boisterous protests outside the Mayor’s residence in Boston’s Roslindale neighborhood last year.

Last year, the city enacted an ordinance restricting protest hours outside the Mayor’s home.

Mayor Wu, making history as both the first female and first Asian-American to serve in Boston’s highest political office, was inaugurated in November 2021.

Her recent actions have drawn comparisons to the late President Richard Nixon, known for keeping lists of political rivals, sparking discussion around the potential for misuse of power in political office.
