Bill Clinton really put his foot in it this time. In what was meant to be a heart felt tribute to deceased former First Lady Rosalynn Carter who died Sunday, Clinton posted a now deleted tribute to Senator Diane Feinstein instead.
According to a statement by the Carter Foundation, “Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, a passionate champion of mental health, caregiving, and women’s rights, passed away Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2:10 p.m. at her home in Plains, Georgia, at the age of 96. She died peacefully, with family by her side.”
She was married to former President Jimmy Carter for for 77 years. Jimmy Carter is now 99 years old and in hospice care himself.
“Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished,” President Carter said. “She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.”
While tribute posts poured out on social media for the loss of Carter, former President Bill Clinton put out a completely botched up post on X.
He started out fine. “Rosalynn Carter was the embodiment of a life led with purpose. My and Hillary’s full statement:”. While the grammar is bad enough, he went on to make a huge blunder as the statement turned from Carter to another dead democrat, Senator Diane Feinstein.
“Hillary and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend, Senator Dianne Feinstein,” he said. The post continues to articulate the accomplishments of the Senator.
The error was so glaring and egregious. People were quick to mock him.
Clinton did delete the post 13 minutes after the fact and managed to put up a condolence note for the right person this time.
“Hillary and I are deeply grateful for her extraordinary service to our nation and world, and for more than forty years of friendship,” he said.
You would think after forty years of friendship he would know the difference between Rosalynn Carter and Diane Feinstein. At least he managed to put up the right picture in a later post.
The error is really inexcusable. He is a former President putting out a public statement on the death of a former first lady. You would think he would have taken the time to read his own post first, or at least a staff member or intern would have reviewed it.
