Renowned archaeologist Dean of Archaeology Steven Collins from Trinity Southwest University claims to have discovered what he believes to be the ancient Biblical city of Sodom.

In an interview with Joel C. Rosenberg on the Rosenberg Report, Collins revealed that the Tell el-Hammam site in Jordan possesses significant characteristics matching the biblical description of Sodom.

With its abundance of Bronze Age artifacts showing signs of a “flash heat” event, the site aligns with the biblical account of Sodom’s fiery destruction.

Collins explained, “As soon as we dig a few centimeters into that [Bronze Age] layer, this piece of glazed pottery—a shoulder of a storage jar—faces up at us.”

A team member also noted the resemblance of the scars to those found at the Trinity nuclear test site in New Mexico, where the first atomic bomb was detonated.

While earlier reports suggested that a meteor impact roughly 4,000 years ago devastated the site, this theory has yet to be definitively confirmed.

However, evidence does indicate the presence of a “charcoal-rich destruction layer” and various melted objects, according to a study published in Nature.

The study proposed that the site experienced a rapid and catastrophic event, as Collins emphasized, “It was wiped out in the blink of an eye.”

Furthermore, Collins asserted that at least 25 geographic references in Scripture can be triangulated to lead to the city of Sodom.

For instance, Genesis 13:10 mentions that when Lot journeyed from Bethel and Ai, he traveled eastwards.

Notably, Tall el-Hammam lies east of Bethel and Ai, supporting the archaeological connection.

The identification of the potential site of Sodom serves as a remarkable discovery in biblical archaeology.

While further research and investigation are necessary to validate these claims, the evidence uncovered so far provides intriguing insights into this ancient city’s existence.

Conservative Christians, who value historical and biblical accuracy, will find this discovery particularly compelling.

The alignment between biblical accounts and the archaeological findings at Tell el-Hammam reinforces the importance of preserving and studying ancient sites.
