Apple has recently released a critical and urgent new update, iOS 17.1.2, soon after the launch of its previous version, 17.1.1.
Released on November 30, this latest update is designed to fix two key security problems found in the earlier version.
Apple is strongly encouraging all iPhone users to install this update, stating, “This update provides important security fixes and is recommended for all users.”
Originally, Apple had planned to introduce iOS 17.2 this month, focusing on new features and small bug fixes.
However, the urgent need to address these security issues became the priority.
The main focus of iOS 17.1.2 is to repair problems in WebKit, the engine behind Apple’s web browser.
The accompanying security notes point out risks related to processing web content, which could potentially reveal sensitive information or allow unauthorized code to be run.
Users can download this update without any new features via the Software Update section in their iPhone’s settings.
Additionally, police departments in the U.S. are warning about a feature from the previous version, iOS 17.1.1, known as NameDrop.
This feature makes it easy to share contacts and photos between iPhones by holding them close together.
However, as the Longwood Police Department mentioned on Facebook, “This feature is defaulted to ‘ON’ which could result in you unknowingly sharing your contact information with others.”
